Coverage

What each defense allows and how receivers produce by coverage — man/zone, specific coverage, and high-safety count. The OPP column shows each team's Week 22 matchup (2025).

▶

The team board ranks defenses by what they allow in each coverage, filtered by zone, by a specific coverage, or by safety count. Expanding a team shows the receivers who have faced it and how they produced against that look. A defense can be strong overall and still leak against one particular shell, which is what the filters are for.

Coverage splits are not position- or alignment-adjusted

Every snap here is classified to a single coverage shell from charted film. Broken coverages, disguised or mixed looks, and busted plays get bucketed to their pre-snap intent, so figures can differ modestly from sources using a different charting standard.

About the NFL Coverage board

What each defense plays and how it holds up when it plays it. Coverage is the shell a defense sits in — man or zone, and which specific zone — and defenses differ far more within those shells than their overall ranking suggests.

How to read it

The team board ranks defenses by what they allow in each coverage, filtered by zone, by a specific coverage, or by safety count. Expanding a team shows the receivers who have faced it and how they produced against that look. A defense can be strong overall and still leak against one particular shell, which is what the filters are for.

Where the numbers come from

Charted per play and aggregated by defending team and coverage over a season-and-week window, then converted to percentiles so a rate can be read against the rest of the league rather than in isolation.

Who it's for

For receiver and passing-game research, and for understanding why a defense that looks strong on a season line keeps giving up production to one type of route runner.

What the NFL stats mean
aDOTAverage depth of target — how far downfield throws travel in the air.
CPOECompletion percentage over expected — how much better or worse a quarterback completes passes than an average one would on the same throws.
RYOERush yards over expected — yards above what an average back would have gained on the same carries, given the blocking and the defense faced.
YPRRReceiving yards earned for every route run, not just the routes that end in a target.
therundown.gg · NFL Coverage
TPRRHow often a receiver is thrown to when he actually runs a route. Credits players who do a lot with few snaps.
YACYards after the catch.
YBC / YACOYards before contact and yards after contact — how much room the blocking created, and how much a runner earned once a defender hit him.
MTFMissed tackles forced — how many defenders a player made miss.
SEPSeparation — yards of space between a receiver and the nearest defender when the ball arrived.
CUSHCushion — how many yards off a receiver the defender lined up before the snap.
TTTTime to throw — seconds from the snap to the release.
AGG%Aggressiveness — share of throws made into tight coverage rather than to an open receiver.
8+ BOXShare of carries against a stacked front of 8 or more defenders near the line.
SUCC%Success rate — share of plays that gained enough yards to keep the offense on track for a first down.
EPA/GExpected points added per game — how much a player or unit moved the needle toward scoring, compared with an average result on the same plays.
PRSS / QBH / SCKPressures, quarterback hits and sacks — three levels of getting to the passer, from disrupting him to bringing him down.
