How to Read This Page

What the columns mean and how to read them
▶

Cells can be read as raw allowances or as ranks, and the toggle switches every stat cell at once. A rank of one means the defense allows the most of that stat to that position — the softest matchup. Color encodes the percentile, so the heat map and the number are saying the same thing. The window control moves the sample between the full season, the recent stretch and a recency-weighted blend, and the today-only filter narrows the board to teams actually playing.

How each defense ranks vs All Players, by stat. Higher percentile = softer matchup.

About NBA Defense vs Position

What each defense allows by position, ranked across the league. A team can defend well overall and still be the place opposing guards go to score, and this board is built to surface that split.

How to read it

Cells can be read as raw allowances or as ranks, and the toggle switches every stat cell at once. A rank of one means the defense allows the most of that stat to that position — the softest matchup. Color encodes the percentile, so the heat map and the number are saying the same thing. The window control moves the sample between the full season, the recent stretch and a recency-weighted blend, and the today-only filter narrows the board to teams actually playing.

Where the numbers come from

Aggregated from per-player game results attributed to the defense faced, then converted to z-scores and percentiles across the league for each stat and position. Ranks are always computed league-wide, so filtering the board to tonight’s teams does not change what a rank means.

Who it's for

For player and DFS research. The recent windows are usually the more useful read once rotations have changed, but the full-season column is there to tell you whether a recent trend is new or long-standing.

What the NBA stats mean
GP / MPGGames played and minutes per game.
REB CHCRebound chances — rebounds that were actually available to a player, not just the ones he grabbed. Useful for separating opportunity from result.
POT ASTPotential assists — passes that would have been assists if the shot had gone in. Measures playmaking without punishing a teammate’s miss.
USG%Usage rate — share of the team’s possessions a player uses while on the floor.
TS%True shooting percentage — scoring efficiency that accounts for two-pointers, three-pointers and free throws together.
ORtg / DRtgPoints produced and points allowed per 100 possessions.
NetRtgOffensive rating minus defensive rating.
DvPDefense vs Position — how much a defense gives up to opponents at one position, rather than overall. A team can defend well overall and still be the place guards go to score.
Allowed / Percentile / AdjustedThree ways to read the same defensive cell. Allowed is the raw per-game number. Percentile ranks it 0 to 100 across the league, where higher means an easier matchup. Adjusted shows how much better or worse players do against that defense than they normally do.
PPPPoints per possession on a given play type — how efficiently a player finishes that action.
therundown.gg · Data Refreshed Aug 14, 6:50 PM
Freq%Frequency — share of a player’s possessions that came from a given play type.
ColorsShading is calibrated to the NBA’s own range, not college. The same number reads a different color on the NCAA board, so do not compare cell colors across the two sports.
