How to read this page

What the columns mean and how to read them
▶

Positions are guard, forward and center — college position data does not carry the finer professional distinctions, so inventing them would be false precision. A cell can print the raw amount per game, a 0-100 rank or the difference from what those players usually do, and each defense can be ranked against all of Division I, its own level or its own conference — a defense that looks ordinary nationally can be the easiest in its league. Team-wide numbers sit alongside and do not change when you switch position.

Which Division I defenses are easiest to score on vs all players, and which are hardest.

Each cell is what that defense gives up to the players you picked, in a game. Green means it gives up more than most — the easier matchup; red means it gives up less. Glossary — Defense vs Position
Per gameHow much of that stat this defense gives up to the players you picked in an average game — the points, rebounds or assists guards have scored on it.
Rank 0-100Where this defense sits among the defenses it is ranked against. 100 means it gives up more of that stat than any of them, so it is the easiest matchup; 0 means it gives up the least. Green is easy, red is hard.
vs AverageHow much more or less those players did against this defense than they usually do. A green plus means they beat their own normal game. Turnovers read the other way — forcing more of them is good defense.
Ranked againstThe group each defense is measured inside: every Division I team, only teams at its own level, or only its own conference. A defense that looks ordinary nationally can be the easiest one in its league.
LevelHigh-major, mid-major and low-major describe how strong a program’s conference is. The three play very different schedules, so the same number does not mean the same thing across them.
DEF RTGPoints this team gives up per 100 trips down the floor. Lower is a better defense.
PACEHow many trips down the floor the team plays in 40 minutes. More trips means more chances for everyone.
PAINT PTSPoints a game this team gives up close to the basket.
dEFG%The share of shots against this defense that go in, counting a three as worth more than a two. Lower means it makes teams take and miss harder shots.
dTOV%How often a trip down the floor against this defense ends in a turnover. Higher is a better defense.
dOREB%The share of its own misses the other team rebounds against this defense. Lower means this defense gets the ball off the glass.
dFTrHow many free throws the other team earns for every shot it takes. Lower means this defense fouls less.
How many gamesHow far back each defense is measured: the whole season, or only its last 15 or 7 games.
Opponent or venueCount only the games against a given class of opponent — the top 25, 50, 100 or 150 teams, a quadrant, the conference — or only the games played at home, on the road, or on a neutral floor.
Min minutesIgnore any opposing player who was on the floor for fewer than this many minutes, so a blowout’s last five minutes do not move the numbers.

About NCAAB Defense vs Position

▶

What each Division I defense allows by position. With three hundred and sixty-odd teams the spread is far wider than in a professional league, which makes the extremes genuinely extreme.
